Magnitude 7.7 Quake Hits Flores Island, At Least 47 Dead
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake offshore Flores Island killed at least 47 people, displaced over 2,000, and caused widespread infrastructure damage, including to five airports. Aftershocks continue and rescue efforts focus on the hardest-hit town of Maumere.
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Flores Island early Saturday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities and leaving more than 2,000 residents displaced. The quake’s epicenter lay roughly 700 km east of Bali, yet tremors were felt far to the north in South and Southeast Sulawesi provinces. ## Immediate Impact and Casualties Authorities confirmed that the hardest-hit area was the port town of Maumere in Sikka Regency, where rescuers reported 20 deaths, six injuries and two people still trapped under rubble. The city’s rescue chief, Fathur Rahman, said some remote villages near the epicenter remained inaccessible to rescue teams. Videos circulating on social media showed damage at Laurentius Say Port, including a boarding ladder collapsing into the water and causing at least one person to fall in. ## Infrastructure Damage and Displacement Suharyanto, head of Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), briefed journalists that landslides had blocked roads and that public infrastructure suffered severe damage, notably five airports across the region. Homes were widely destroyed, prompting the evacuation of over 2,000 people. Electricity and communications were knocked out, and restoring these services became a priority, with the deployment of Starlink satellite internet cited as part of the recovery effort. ## Aftershocks, Tsunami Warning and Geological Context The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning shortly after the main shock, reporting waves under one metre before lifting the alert about two and a half hours later. BMKG recorded 235 aftershocks, four of which exceeded magnitude 5.0, and warned that shaking could continue for the next two weeks. Nelly Florida Riama of BMKG explained that the quake resulted from back-arc thrust activity in the Flores Sea. The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources noted reports of water rising from the ground, suggesting possible liquefaction, but said confidence in that assessment was moderate to low. ## Volcanic Activity Concerns Flores Island hosts 15 volcanoes, including Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, which erupted in November 2024 and remained active this week. Acting head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, dismissed any direct link between the earthquake and volcanic activity, stating that while the quake was detected by volcanic monitoring instruments, no causal relationship had been established. Suharayanto added that East Flores Regency, home to the volcano, was not affected by the earthquake, and BNPB planned to redirect emergency supplies originally stored near the volcano to the quake-hit areas. ## Historical Context and Outlook The region’s seismic vulnerability is underscored by a previous magnitude 7.8 earthquake in 1992 that claimed roughly 2,000 lives. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonically active belt that hosts 127 active volcanoes, making it prone to both earthquakes and eruptions. Rescue operations continue in Maumere and surrounding districts, while authorities focus on restoring power, communications, and transport links amid ongoing aftershocks.
