Robinhood expands weekend stock trading

Robinhood will enable weekend trading for select U.S. Stocks and ETFs from Sunday 8 p.m. to Friday 8 p.m. New York time, creating a 24/7 access model via Bruce Markets.

Market Structure: Robinhood will enable weekend trading for select U.S

Robinhood plans to let customers trade a curated list of U.S. Stocks and exchange-traded funds over the weekend, from Sunday at 8 p.m. New York time through Friday at 8 p.m. The weekend trading service will route orders to a trading venue operated by Bruce Markets.S. Equity market weekend session. This initiative seeks to fill the Friday-to-Sunday gap in trading access, extending the broker's existing 24 Hour Market service. The conventional U.S. Equity session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. New York time.

Market structure distinction

The weekend equity trading experiment highlights a distinction between trading access and market structure. Sidharth Sogani Jain, Founder, CEO & Fund Manager at Blue Aster Capital and CREBACO Global, stated that the extension of trading time is 'perceived access' and does not replace the exchange session. Jain noted that Saturday and Sunday prints should be read as a thinner, off-exchange session with wider spreads, less depth, and prices that may not hold at Monday's open. The 4 p.m. Close sets the reference price, index levels, corporate actions, and the T+1 settlement clock. Jain stated that until clearing and surveillance run on the same clock, 24/7 is convenience, not a new definition of the day.

Broader trading expansion

Robinhood is rolling out perpetual crypto futures and AI trading agents alongside the weekend equity service. The company plans to offer perpetual futures on select cryptocurrencies through its Bitstamp exchange, with leverage of up to 10 times on some contracts. Robinhood Markets, Inc. Operates a financial services platform designed to provide investing and trading products through mobile applications and a website, including commission-free trading in stocks and ETFs, options trading, cryptocurrency services, margin investing, retirement accounts, and cash management features.

Robinhood launched AI-powered trading agents in May, allowing users to connect third-party AI agents to the platform. More than 150,000 customers have opened agentic trading accounts since May, with agents using Robinhood's tools nearly 30 million times per day. The company has also announced financial-earnings contracts tied to indicators such as Tesla vehicle sales, subject to final SEC approval.

Other exchanges are also extending hours. Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange and 24X National Exchange are planning longer sessions, with Nasdaq adding a trading window from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda noted that New York financial markets operated Saturday sessions for eight decades until 1952. Steve Quirk said: "Breaking news doesn’t wait for an opening bell." The weekend trading service will begin with a limited number of symbols as rollout progresses.
