Singapore-based fintech Aleta launched its Aleta Sanrio Hello Kitty Visa debit cards on September 18, 2024. This is the second release in a three-part series of cards featuring Sanrio characters, aimed at collectors and lifestyle reward seekers.

Applications for 9,000 physical and virtual cards are open via the Aleta Adventure app. The company's founder, Ryan Gwee, stated they were building on strong demand seen for their Cinnamoroll-themed card in June. He said consumers retain a deep emotional connection to these characters.

Card Designs and Availability

The Hello Kitty card comes in three designs. Each physical card has a unique serial number. Beyond the standard 9,000 cards, a limited run of 300 metal Visa debit cards will be available through a lucky draw based on card spend points.

Gwee noted that the 9,000 Cinnamoroll-themed cards launched earlier were fully applied for and approved within 45 days. The company expects even better demand for Hello Kitty, citing the character's multi-generational fanbase since its 1974 launch.

Rewards and Features

The new card launch includes an expanded rewards catalogue with limited edition merchandise. Its scan & pay feature, which allows cardholders to scan local QR codes to pay overseas with zero foreign exchange fees, will be widened. It will expand beyond China to Vietnam and South Korea. Japan will be added when the third character, Kuromi, launches in November.

Cardholders can accumulate points on eligible transactions to redeem items from an exclusive catalogue. The rewards include Sanrio-themed cabin luggage, mahjong solitaire sets, grocery trolleys, yoga mats, dinnerware sets, apron and mitten sets, ceramic teapots with glass cups, basketballs, cushions with baskets, and bath towel sets.

Every qualifying spend of S$1 or more earns one instant Spin & Win entry, with every spin being a guaranteed win. The grand prize is a trip to Sanrio Puroland in Japan, available for redemption in December. Cardholders also get 10% off merchandise at Sanrio Shop outlets in Takashimaya and Chinatown when paying with their Aleta Adventure card.

Pricing and Promotions

The Hello Kitty card costs $18 each. Registration includes a limited-edition personalised Hello Kitty drink bottle, a five-year annual fee waiver, two tickets to IMBA Theatre at Gardens by the Bay, and three free days of 1GB + unlimited data with an eSIM.

Customers can get a 15% discount on the card by signing up at Sanrio Shop outlets. They must download the Aleta Adventure App, sign up on the spot, select the card design, and enter the store's promo code before checkout.

Impact on BIN Sponsorship Business

The buzz from the Cinnamoroll launch has led to more enquiries for Aleta's Visa BIN sponsorship programme. As a Principal Member of Visa, Aleta sponsors its Visa BIN to enterprises that want to issue their own branded Visa debit cards. This programme is a key part of the company's business stats.

With Aleta as their BIN sponsor, enterprises can access the fintech's plug-and-play tech solutions. This can reduce their time-to-market for Visa co-branded and white-label cards to as fast as two weeks. Gwee said the company is responding to the positive interest in this programme as quickly as possible. The success of these themed card launches demonstrates the power of strong branding and collector appeal in the payments space standings.

The Cinnamoroll cards were mostly sought after by young female customers in their 20s to 30s. After Hello Kitty, the final character in the series, Kuromi, is scheduled for launch in November this year.
